Best Time to Visit Flores and Komodo
Overview: Dry Season vs Wet Season
Flores sits south of the equator and has a tropical monsoon climate with two distinct seasons.
| Season | Months | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Dry | May–October | Sunshine, calm seas, clear skies |
| Wet | November–April | Daily rain, rough seas, cloud |
| Peak | July–August | Best weather, highest crowds |
| Shoulder | May–June, Sept–Oct | Good weather, fewer visitors |
| Low | December–March | Wet, some closures, best prices |
Month-by-Month Breakdown
May — Shoulder, excellent value
Dry season begins. Seas calm down quickly. Liveaboards running well. Labuan Bajo quiet after Easter. Recommended for budget-conscious travelers.
June — Building peak
Reliable dry weather. Diving excellent. Crowds building. Book ahead for popular guesthouses.
July — Peak season
Best weather across Flores. Kelimutu visibility excellent. Komodo at capacity. Manta rays very active. Book everything 2–3 months ahead. Water temperature at southern Komodo sites drops.
August — Peak season
Same as July. European holidays mean Labuan Bajo is most crowded. Liveaboard prices highest.
September — Shoulder into peak
Weather still reliable. Crowds drop notably from August peak. Sweet spot: good conditions, fewer tourists, lower prices.
October — Late dry season
Some rain starts in east Flores (Maumere, Larantuka). Western Flores still mostly dry. Good value.
November — Transition
Weather unpredictable. Some days perfect, some wet. Seas getting rougher. Last reliable month for liveaboards.
December–February — Wet season
Northwest monsoon. Heavy rain, especially mornings and afternoons. Liveaboard operators often pause or reduce sailings. Kelimutu frequently clouded. Labuan Bajo restaurants and hostels half-empty — good prices.
March–April — Transition out
Rain tapering off. April is often excellent: calm seas returning, good diving, very few tourists, best prices of any good-weather month. Underrated month to visit.
Specific Activity Windows
Komodo Dragons (Komodo Island, Rinca)
Open year-round (closed 1–2 days/year for census). Dragons are more active in the morning regardless of season. No meaningful seasonal difference in sightings.
Kelimutu sunrise
Best May–October when skies are clear at 5 AM. Wet season: the lake colors change more dramatically (chemical reactions from rain runoff) but visibility is uncertain. Arrive regardless — even a partially cloudy sunrise with colored lakes is spectacular.
Liveaboard Lombok–Komodo
Run April–October reliably. November–March: still operating but expect rougher passages and some cancellations. Crossing the Sape Strait in December–January can involve 3–5 meter swells.
Wae Rebo Village trek
Accessible year-round, but the 4-hour uphill trek is miserable in heavy rain and the mountain fog is thick November–March. May–October gives you the best chance of clear mountain views and a dry trail.
Diving Komodo
Best May–November. April is excellent. December–March: possible but visibility reduced, currents less predictable.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to visit Flores?
May to October is the dry season and the best time to visit Flores. July, August, and September offer the most reliable weather, clearest skies at Kelimutu, and calmest seas for diving and liveaboards. October is shoulder season — still dry but crowds thin out.
When is the best time to dive in Komodo?
April to November for warm water (26–29°C) and good visibility. August and September bring strong currents to Komodo — ideal for manta ray sightings but challenging for beginners. April–June is the sweet spot: warm water, manageable currents, fewer boats. December–March has rougher seas and reduced visibility but good for whale sharks near southern sites.
Can I visit Flores in the wet season?
Yes, but plan for rain. The wet season (November–April) brings heavy afternoon downpours, particularly December–February. Roads can wash out, Kelimutu may be clouded over for days, and liveaboard crossings can be rough. It's not impossible to visit — many attractions still operate — but Flores in the wet season requires more flexibility.
Is Flores crowded during peak season?
July and August are the busiest months, especially in Labuan Bajo and Komodo National Park. The park has a daily visitor cap (1,500 pax at Komodo Island and Rinca combined), and popular viewpoints on Padar can feel congested. Book accommodation and liveaboards months in advance for July–August travel.
When is the best time to see manta rays in Komodo?
Manta Point near Karang Makassar in Komodo is active year-round, but the highest concentrations are from April to November when currents bring plankton blooms. December to February has some sightings but more variable conditions. Manta Ray Point near Komodo Island is also productive May–October.
What is the water temperature in Komodo?
The Indian Ocean upwelling in Komodo creates unusual temperature variation. Northern sites (Gili Lawa, Tatawa) run 26–29°C year-round. Southern sites (Crystal Rock, Castle Rock) can hit 18–22°C when upwellings are strongest (July–September) — take a 5mm wetsuit. This cold water brings great visibility and pelagics but is jarring without preparation.
Is July–August too hot to hike on Flores?
Temperatures in Labuan Bajo and coastal areas reach 30–33°C in July–August. Mountain areas like Bajawa (1,100 m) and Ruteng (1,200 m) are cooler at 18–24°C during the day. The Kelimutu sunrise hike starts at 4 AM when temperatures are 10–15°C at the crater rim — bring a jacket regardless of season.
What is Flores like in December and January?
These are the wettest months. Labuan Bajo and western Flores get heavy daily rain from the northwest monsoon. The sea between Lombok and Labuan Bajo is rough — liveaboard crossings are frequently cancelled or postponed. Kelimutu is often obscured by cloud. That said, it's low season, so accommodation is cheap and you'll have many sites to yourself.
