Ende is central Flores’ largest city — a port town of 80,000 people with an airport, a functioning harbour, and ATMs that actually work. It lacks the drama of Bajawa’s volcanoes or Moni’s crater lakes, but it’s a necessary transit point and has one historic site worth your time.

The Sukarno Exile House

From 1934 to 1938, the Dutch colonial government exiled Sukarno — then a rising nationalist leader, later Indonesia’s first president — to Ende. The house where he lived with his wife Inggit has been preserved exactly as it was: modest colonial furniture, a writing desk, period photographs, and a small garden.

It’s said that during his four years in Ende, Sukarno formulated the Pancasila — the five philosophical principles that became the foundation of the Indonesian state. Whether that’s historically precise or nationalist myth is debated, but the site is genuinely worth 30 minutes.

Location: Jl. Perwira, central Ende. Open daily. Entry free. Indonesian guides available on request.

Ende as a Transport Hub

Ende sits at the midpoint of the Trans-Flores Highway and is the most accessible city in central Flores by air. If you’re flying in, the airport is 4 km south of the city centre.

Key routes from Ende:

  • West to Bajawa: 3 hours (IDR 70,000–90,000 by bus)
  • East to Moni: 1.5 hours (IDR 30,000–50,000 by bus, shared transport)
  • East to Maumere: 5–6 hours (IDR 100,000–150,000 by bus)
  • PELNI ferry to Kupang: ~14 hours (departs weekly)

The main bus terminal (Terminal Wolowona) is 2 km east of town. Departure times are loosely morning-until-midday — confirm the previous afternoon.

Money & Practicalities

Do your banking in Ende. Beyond here heading east, ATMs become unreliable. The BNI and BRI branches on Jl. El Tari in the city centre have reliable machines. The Pasar Mbongawani market (open daily mornings) has everything from fresh produce to phone credit.

The public hospital (RSUD Ende) handles emergencies — the best medical facility between Labuan Bajo and Maumere.

Onward to Kelimutu

The standard move is to overnight in Ende and catch the morning bus or hire an ojek/car east to Moni (50 km, 1.5 hours). From Moni, you’re perfectly positioned for the pre-dawn Kelimutu trek the following morning.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ende known for?

Ende is the largest city in central Flores and a significant transport hub. It's known for two things: the Sukarno Exile House, where Indonesia's founding president lived under Dutch house arrest from 1934 to 1938, and as the gateway to Kelimutu volcano (50 km east). The city has a functioning port and airport with connections to Bali.

How do I get to Ende?

By air: H. Hasan Aroeboesman Airport (ENE) has daily flights from Bali (Ngurah Rai) via Citilink/Wings Air, and connections from Labuan Bajo and Kupang. By road: 3 hours from Bajawa west, 1.5 hours from Moni east, 5–6 hours from Maumere east. By sea: PELNI ferries from Ende port connect to Kupang (West Timor) and Waingapu (Sumba) weekly.

Is Ende worth visiting or just a stopover?

Mostly a stopover — most travelers spend one night and continue to Moni for Kelimutu. That said, the Sukarno House is genuinely interesting and takes 30 minutes to visit. The Ende waterfront and Pasar Mbongawani (main market) are worth an hour. The city has better infrastructure (ATMs, hospitals, guesthouses) than the villages to either side.

What is the Sukarno House in Ende?

Ir. Soekarno's Exile Home (Rumah Pengasingan Bung Karno) is the modest colonial house where Indonesia's first president lived during his Dutch-imposed exile from 1934 to 1938. During this period Sukarno is said to have developed the Pancasila — Indonesia's five national principles. The house is preserved as a museum with original furniture and photographs. Entry is free; guides speak Indonesian only.

How far is Ende from Kelimutu?

50 km east along a winding mountain road — roughly 1.5 hours to Moni village (the Kelimutu base camp). Most travelers use Ende as an arrival/departure point and overnight in Moni rather than Ende. If your flight lands in Ende in the afternoon, you can be in Moni for dinner and at Kelimutu for sunrise the next morning.

Where do I stay in Ende?

Hotel Ikhlas and Hotel Safari near the city centre are reliable mid-range options (IDR 200,000–350,000/night). For budget, several losmen near the bus terminal cost IDR 100,000–150,000. Ende is not a destination in itself, so don't over-invest in accommodation here — save your nights for Moni.

What currency and ATMs are available in Ende?

Ende has multiple ATMs (BNI, BRI, Mandiri, BCA) in the city centre — this is your last reliable chance to withdraw cash before heading to Moni or further east. Moni has very limited banking. Stock up on Rupiah here.
